Entry 5: Mayhem with Allstate
Hello Dark Passengers,
Have you ever seen a commercial that's just so ridiculous, but still gets their point across? Of course you have! They're everywhere! The Mayhem Allstate commercials are a great example of this. They use humor to entertain the viewer while also giving a real example of something that might happen to you, further enticing you to want to partner with them for your car insurance.
The advertisement opens with our main character announcing that he is a bear. Now, we obviously know he isn't actually a bear, this gives us the insight that he will be acting like a bear. Which is further proven by the fact that he is holding a fish, as we know those are a regular in a bear's diet. He then walks up to a car in the woods, presumably owned by a family who's camping, and slams his arms against the car and after a few seconds of looking in the car, he pulls the door off with ease. We are all aware that the average man wouldn't be able to do that, especially not in the suit the man is wearing, but the average bear would be able to do that with ease. Then, as a bear would, he climbs into the care and proceeds to make a mess with the snacks as if he was a bear searching for food. After he is done, he exits the car and starts to walk away, but not before hitting the mirror off the drivers side of the car, again for seemingly no reason, but this is also to show that a bear can damage your car with no reason.
The monotone way our character portrays the bear is both humorous to the viewer, but also makes it easy for the viewer to understand what he's saying and what he's doing. But Allstate deciding to use a man instead of a bear, it allows him to verbally describe what's happening and add an element of understanding to the advertisement. The ad is then wrapped up by our main character telling us to get out car insurance through Allstate, so we're be covered for things, like the "bear attack" we just witnessed.
Allstate uses humor to sell their car insurance. This keeps the viewer entertained while watching their ad, but also keeps them there long enough for them to be able to pitch their insurance to the viewers. This method works so well, they've made many different Mayhem advertisements alone.
Until next time,
-Tristan
